From the 19th century, mining companies built equipment and encouraged the development of clubs, to supervise the free time of miners and their families while providing them with sporting activities: in fact, sport requires physical skills and hygiene. life which constitute good workers. Sport also reveals individual talents: athletes with international careers come from clubs in the Mining Basin such as Pierre Legrain and Michel Jazy in athletics, the boxer Georges Carpentier, Jean Stablinski in cycling or Raymond Kopaszewski, footballer. The exhibition gives pride of place to emotions, those of rediscovering the popular fervor of matches, races, competitions, discovering the athletes’ objects (jerseys, bikes, shoes, etc.), or even listening to their testimonies.
